2011 led to the further planning, fabrication, outfitting and installation of Hendrik Scheel’s design “CANADA’S SMALLEST THEATRE” in my studio. Hendrik is superfamous in the German theatre scene so it was a great honour to work so closely together!

In August 2010 I began a year long Fellowship at Toronto’s largest multidisciplinary festival, Luminato. Midway through I started to chat with the producer of Visual arts, Robert Vanderberg about doing audio description for visually impaired patrons. With the festivals support and though partnerships with Theatre Local and Rose Jacobsen through PicassoPro/Creative Trust, I ended up writing, recording and producing a downloadable MP3 with an audio description of Philip Beesley’s SARGASSO which was downloaded over 300 times in 10 days! This project was such a thrill, making the work accessible to so many more patrons and going to the artist’s studio and talking about his work so I could get the vocabulary right was a total treat.

Or is it? Lunch can be an amazing journey when you mix the right ingredients. As a part of a unique Fellowship at the Luminato Festival, I was tasked to coordinate LUNCHTIME CONVERSATIONS. It turned out not so bad- here’s a rundown of the incredible talent I booked, hosted and sometimes interviewed: Chris Lorway, Devyani Saltzman, Jessica Dargo Caplan , Robert Vanderberg, Derek Andrews, Mitchell Marcus, Lata Pada, Tom Diamond, Graham McLaren, Daniel Brooks, Guy DeCarteret, Julie Tepperman, David Levine, Brigitte Haentjens, Michele Smith, Dean Gilmour, Albert Schultz, Trish Lindstrom, Mike Ross, Rick Phillips, Sam Banks, and David Kent.

Graphic Novel

Springing out of a coincidental conversation at the ARTISTS’ WEEK FESTIVAL in 2009 I began collaborating with Ruth Tait of Talking Pictures. Over the course of 6 months I we put together My Origami Motorcycle, the graphic novel. It has since been published by Domestic Tragedy Press with distribution in Toronto Montreal and New York and it got this fabulous mention in a Globe and Mail article which seems to determine that it is the FIRST EVER play turned graphic novel, I’m chuffed.

A bilingual play on stationary bicycles

RPM has to be one of the coolest projects I’ve ever worked on. Getting together with my collaborator of almost 10 years, respected Quebec theatre artist Émilie Gauvin and writing on bikes for a month was truly incredible. We ended with a workshop presentation at the Studio de creation of Théâtre français de Toronto made possible by the generous support of tout le monde s’appelle Alice, Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Théâtre Français de Toronto, Quad Spinning Gym and Domestic Tragedy Press. We are planning for the next phase now.

They say you should be careful what you wish for… I dreamed of having a functional studio I could rehearse and create in but it seemed an impossibility for my tiny space. Then, I got chatting with theatre designer Hendrik Scheel, who is based out of Berlin. He came to Toronto to visit and see the space in the summer of 2010 and starting from a maquette we began to set the wheels in motion for an incredible and intense collaboration that set the stage for “CANADA’S SMALLEST THEATRE”.

The artists in my community hadn’t had an opportunity to see each others work, so with the help of a small team and many mighty volunteers, we produced a 10-day festival called ARTISTS’ WEEK. It was attended by over 700 people, and over 30 artists participated.

Pasolini again!

I had a blast diving back into the physicality of THE PASOLINI PROJECT. We were presented by Canadian Stage at the Berkeley Street Theatre as a part of Spotlight.Italy. An ongoing, groundbreaking, and ambitious project by TheatreRUN: PYLADE by Pier Paolo Pasolini was translated by Adam Paolozza and Coleen MacPherson, directed by Adam Paolozza, featuring Julian Dezotti, Dan Watson, Michele Smith, Dean Gilmour, Lisa Marie Diliberto, Rebecca Singh, Fabio Fabbri and Miranda Calderon with music by Matt Smith.
